Nefertari, the Great Royal Wife of Ramesses II seems to have been particularly favoured by her husband. Her image survives in numerous statues and reliefs, she had a temple dedicated to her at Abu Simbel, and also received one of the most beautiful tombs to have survived into the modern era. Nefertari probably did not live even to the half way point in Ramesses’ reign, so what lay behind these special honours? Who were her children, and who eventually took her place? P
