The Roman emperor Hadrian travelled the length and breadth of his empire, but his visit to Egypt was clouded with tragedy when his favourite, Antinous, drowned in the Nile. The emperor was said to have been grief stricken and declared Antinous a god, but the death was widely regarded as ‘suspicious’. What really happened during this tour of Egypt to give rise to a new god?
